I have always been interested in the world around me and the people in it. I firmly believe that to understand the world we live in we need some historical perspective, and a willingness to reflect on what we see and do.
I specialise in engaging and informative content that resonates with readers. My aim is to increase reflection on our history and contemporary global society - its ill's and its benefits. Making people think is my greatest aim and success.

An author now with a second book published, I previously worked as a teacher, and travel extensively. These interests, with sport, film, and reading, have given me a wealth of knowledge and understanding that in turn give me my opinions, my ideas, my perspective, my imagination, and my vision of the world.

Through looking at Government and Leadership, Science and Technology, Religion, and other areas, this book shows how we got to where we are. It uses different perspectives, current developments, and various subject disciplines, including a bit of philosophy and common sense, to suggest where we might be headed.

As Shakespeare would appreciate, some parts are bigger than others, but the whole is better when everyone plays their role. A Head of State may have unique power, a devoted activist out-size influence, but if individuals choose to buy or not buy a brand, to recycle, or to vote, they have an influence. Everyday millions of people make choices and changes that have an influence.

Beginning at the very beginning this book charts the development of England's, and then Britain's, characteristics, through the great and the good, through ordinary men and women, through landscape and rural life, market towns, provincial cities and the great metropolis of London, through people, places, events and ideas.

63. Reform or Revolution: Part 1
It could not go on. Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) foreshadowed changes. His ‘Utilitarianism’ promoted sweeping away what did not work. He applied this to social reform and welfare, politics and especially the legal system, which he sought with some degree of success to reform towards more rational principles and away from individual perceptions. He saw the development of a moral good based in the natural human instinct of balancing self-interest with possible harm.

“Paul Hodson has accomplished the mountainous challenge of documenting British History from the geological formation of these islands to the arrival of humans, right up to our present-day culture. He has carved the path for readers to follow him in 100 steps. To see this timeline so clearly adds a new and surprising context to what and where we are today.”
Matthew Parris, of The Times, 1st June 2021.

Still one of my favourite places the museum remains free (donations encouraged). A testament to Victorian ambition, it has moved with the times and remains one of the world's great museums, and places of awe and wonder, and education.
